After a couple inches of snow falling overnight, and a few more expected tomorrow, it seems that winter may finally be upon us. Here at the shop, we've been keeping warm by building up some awesome reconditioned bikes to sell, as well as scheduling some exciting repairs.

If you've been thinking of getting a tune-up or overhaul soon, winter is a slower time for us and, therefore, the wait is much shorter! Often, we're able to schedule larger repair jobs to be completed within just a few days. Of course, like always, we need to see the bike to give you an accurate estimate of time & cost, but our estimates are always free. And! Until the end of February, we have a Winter Overhaul special! Our Complete Overhaul, normally priced at $150, is only $120!

In addition, if you schedule any of our labor packages (tune-ups and overhauls) before the end of February, you'll be automatically entered to win some sweet prizes, including (but not limited to!) a few Blaze 2-Watt headlights by Planet Bike!

Winter vacation!

The BNB Bike Shop will be closed December 24 through January 2.

Winter Overhaul Special

We are offering a special rate on our Complete Overhaul repair package from now until February 28.

This is a major, all-encompassing repair package. It's a good thing to do every 1-3 years (or so--depends on the rider and other factors), especially if you're a daily rider, if your bike has "good bones" but needs to be gone through and cleaned and renewed inside and out. This is also a good thing to do if you're thinking about a complete makeover... new handlebar style, new brake levers, shifters, etc. Get it all done at once. Best case, your bike will look and feel like a new machine.

this bike is getting "the works"

The Complete Overhaul includes the labor for overhauling the bike's headset, bottom bracket, and hubs; all moving parts get removed, cleaned and lubricated or replaced; it also covers labor for replacement of cables, chain, gears, and re-wrapping of bars, as well as the labor to replace any part. The flat labor rate for this Winter Overhaul is $120 (normally $150). Bearings and additional parts prices vary per bike, so expect a total repair price in the ~$200+ range (more if lots of parts will be replaced; perhaps less if few parts need replacement).

Bottom bracket removal in progress -- this one will be replaced with a sealed cartridge unit.

Is this repair right for all bikes? Many of our customers' bikes would benefit from this repair, but not all. Bring your bike in for a free estimate to see if you should take advantage of this special offer. It's a great opportunity to get "the works" done at a discount.

Winter Commuting preparedness + free clinic 11/13

We're well stocked with winter commuting gear, and not a moment too soon! Last week we got in a full line of winter cycling gloves, including a moderate fall glove in addition to the more extreme lobster claw biking mitten which we thought we wouldn't need so soon, until that early snowstorm proved otherwise..

For new and seasoned winter commuters alike, we are having a free Winter Commuting clinic here at the bike shop at 18 Bartlett Sq., Jamaica Plain on Sunday, November 13 at 6:00PM. Come learn more about winter riding and the gear that helps make it easier!

In the meantime, here's a quick list of things we stock that you might want to acquire as you bike on through ice, rain, sleet and snow. If any of the following items are unfamiliar, come in and ask us! we'll tell you all about:

Fenders--good all year round but even more so in winter, when road spray is full of salt and sand
Studded tires (available in 700c, 26", and 20" wheel diameters)
Balaclava or other head wear
"lobster claw" mittens
wool glove liners
waterproof pants
shoe covers
Lights (this is a MUST, by law and otherwise)...let them be bright ones, with fully charged batteries. white in front, red in rear.
high-visibility accessories like reflective vests, tapes, etc...remember that cars often have fogged-up windshields, snow sliding off roofs and worse in winter, so the more you can do to make yourself highly visible the better off you'll be.
helmet cover
Wool base layers (we've stocked these for a few years now, and they aren't cheap, but customers tell us all the time that they really do make winter much more comfortable and are worth it)
all-weather brake pads. If we've ever installed brake pads on your bike they were probably these, but if your brakes aren't working as well as you remember them doing, come by to have us check it out.

What else? We always like to hear what our customers are doing to make winter riding more enjoyable, including product selection! Our goal is to stock things that work well, hold up well, and ideally don't cost more than a day's wages... This can be a challenge, especially in the glove department. wheel inspiration

Have you ever wanted a front or rear wheel that does a little more than the ones that came with your bike originally? With our wheelbuilding class coming up, here's a few ideas to get you started dreaming of purpose-built wheels you can build if you take our class (or you can pay us to build one of these for you any time, if you'd rather).

1. A wheel to go the distance. Maybe you're planning a seriously long distance tour. Maybe you're a hefty guy or gal. Maybe you ride with a lot of cargo 365 days a year. Maybe all of the above applies to you! You should consider building the ultimate wheel for your circumstances, one that will perform flawlessly for years. Choosing the right hub, rim, and spokes is essential. We are happy to offer advice.

2. A wheel that turns your pedal power into electricity. Woah, seriously? Yes. This technology is well developed and can be yours! If you ride at night and want really bright lights that you never have to change the batteries for, you should definitely get a dynamo hub and build it into your front wheel! get off the grid! Lots of options for dynamo hubs at a few different price points, so we can discuss these with you if you're interested.

3. A wheel with internal gears. Like an old English 3-speed. Internally geared hubs are great! You can have a really simple drivetrain, no derailleurs or multiple cogs, but beautifully smooth shifting in a reasonable range of gears. Often, bikes with derailleurs can be retrofitted for internal gears, so just bring your bike in for us to see if you're not sure if this is the kind of thing you like the idea of.

4. a sweet set of vanity wheels with novelty rims/hubs/etc. You can have the woodgrain deep-V rims, gold hubs, pink, chartreuse, whatever! customize.

The best, most durable wheels are those built by hand and the most rewarding way of acquiring these is to learn to build them oneself. In this six week course students will learn to do just that and then use that knowledge to build two wheels to take home. During the first class we'll cover information about wheel materials and design and everyone will decide what hubs and rims they would like to use. The remainder of the classes will be spent lacing, truing, and tensioning these wheels. No prior experience with any of this is required. The fee for the course is $150 plus materials. Everyone will receive 10% off the parts they are purchasing for their wheel set, but expect to pay around $70 for spokes, $30-80 for each rim, and $60 and up for a set of hubs. Everyone should come to first class knowing at least what they intend to use their wheels for and be prepared to pay for any materials we need to order. Friendly bike shop employees are often asked how they learned to fix bikes. There's a variety of answers to that question, as the field attracts people from diverse backgrounds. some were groomed for the job afternoons and weekends throughout high school, while others came to it much later in life. Some grew up tinkering with bikes in their back yard while others held a wrench for the first time at a Bikes Not Bombs volunteer night! Many local shops offer repair classes for the home mechanic, but there are few opportunities for in-depth training for the aspiring shop mechanic or field worker. For those who did not grow up learning how to make or fix things or use tools, there is even more to learn!

Many of the current staff at the Bikes Not Bombs shop are graduates of BNB's Vocational program, a low-cost mechanics course geared to people who are serious about working with bicycles. Enrollment is limited to 10 people, youth (15+) and adults.

Do you have an old French-made bike with an itty-bitty 24.0mm seatpost? Have you ever needed to replace the seatpost because the original one was too short, or the clamp broke, or someone swiped it? Then you know that they were unavailable new, and your only hope was to find a used one somewhere...until now.

We are, as far as we know, North America's only source for new 24.0 seatposts since they went out of production decades ago. We had them specially made for us in Taiwan. These 24.0 seatposts are a Bikes Not Bombs exclusive bike part.

The Story

How did BNB come upon such stunning bicycles? When Pedro’s was looking for great bikes for their 2010 Elite Cylcocross teams, they decided to stir up the passions of each coast by having their West Coast Team race on bikes made on the East Coast (Circle A’s) and their East Coast Team race on bikes made on the West Coast (Chris King Cielos).

After the season ended, Pedro’s donated two of these custom-made Cielo cross bikes to Bikes Not Bombs and we are excited to announce that they will be auctioned online! The bikes are each valued at over $2,500 but we’ll start the bidding at only $1! All of the proceeds will support Bikes Not Bombs’ work using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change, both locally and globally.

CESTA (El Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technology) is an environmental advocacy organization that focuses on issues of environmental justice and sustainable transportation. The vision of CESTA is "to have a country and therefore a world where different societies have as their fundamental task: to live in harmony within themselves, among themselves and with their environment." CESTA runs a mechanics training center for young people near San Salvador, designs and produces pedal-powered machines and is a major proponent for bicycles as a viable mode of transportaiton throughout El Salvador.

Aug 25: The Boston Cyclists Union First Annual Meeting The BCU has been working hard to improve bicycling in Boston. Among other things, they've been advocating for a city-wide network of bike paths, lanes, and other bike facilities that make cycling more appealing to families and commuters. They've also been running their Bike to Market free bike repair stands at farmers markets all summer, and we've been proud to partner with them in their efforts. This Thursday, August 25, they hold their First Annual Meeting. The meeting agenda leans heavily to the party side of things and there is an impressive list of raffle items you might win if you attend! The BNB Bike Shop donated two valuable gift certificates to the event so we expect to see a lot of our loyal friends and customers there! Cyclocross Skills Seminar!

Learn to fix a flat tire 7/19 (tonight!)

Come learn --for free-- how to fix a flat tire, right here at the Bikes not Bombs Retail Bike Shop, 18 Bartlett Sq, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. Directions to the bike shop

We'll show you how to:

-Remove tire and tube from the rim using tire levers
-determine the cause of the flat tire and take steps to prevent it from happening again
-patch the tube
-reinstall the tube and tire

This is such a valuable skill to have that we want everyone to know how! Recycling is at the heart of what BNB does-- but currently the economics of patching and reusing a tube at a professional bike shop are not favorable for business (it takes a few extra minutes, and sometimes has to be re-done; this labor costs more than a new tube) so we don't do it. However it makes heaps of sense for the rider of the bicycle to patch her own tubes when the occasional flat tire occurs. And of course knowing how to remove a tire and re-install it without undue struggle or damaging the tire or tube or is essential. You can keep using a tube with multiple patches on it indefinitely-- once patched, the tube is basically as good as new (with a few exceptions which we'll discuss in class).

So come to this free clinic or the next one (next flat fixing clinic is on 8/11) and get skilled!

The Wake Up the Earth Festival 2011 is this Saturday, May 7! Come to the park near Stonybrook T station between 12-5 pm and follow the festival all the way to the Brewery and the Bikes Not Bombs Hub at 284 Amory St (home to BNB's youth programs, volunteer night, and our general headquarters). There will be volunteers there giving tours of the space and showing videos about BNB's work. If you're primarily a customer of the Bikes Not Bombs Bike Shop, this is a great chance to deepen your understanding of Bikes Not Bombs!

New Reflective Gear

Ok, so not everyone wants to be decked out in hi-viz yellow and bright orange, but most will agree that it is a good idea to be highly visible when cycling, walking, or jogging. Dressed in dark clothing from head to toe with a tiny light or none at all (or one that's aimed poorly or running out of batteries) and nary a reflector is not ok! To give everyone some options, we recently bolstered our selection of highly reflective accessories.

We've got subtle pin stripe tapes, international yield triangles, the wonderful safety sash (a particular favorite of some of us -- and hard to find elsewhere!), various ankle bands, two kinds of vests, and more! Unlike lights, which are required at night, these reflective accents are optional.

Easy riders

Do you admire the comfortable, upright, relaxed posture allowed by the kinds of city bikes so ubiquitous in other countries (and increasingly popular, though still hard to find in this country)? Here are a few bikes we have in the shop right now that feature upright back-swept bars, and in some cases, matching fenders and chainguards. All these things make for bikes that are charming, classic, and functional. If you're a devotee of drop bars-- you might just want to try this other style.

One chainring in the front, and a 5 speed freewheel in the back allow the original matching chainguard to stay intact.

This bike has 8 speeds. That's right, an 8-speed internally geared hub. An excellent choice for stop-and-go urban riding. You can shift while stopped at a traffic light! And unlike many other hubs of all stripes, this one is virtually silent. You must test ride it to see for yourself! Note the matching fenders.

A Royce Union three speed. For the budget conscious: an inexpensive new steel three-speed wheel in the rear and alloy front wheel keeps both cost and weight of this bike in balance.

What else is new here? Well it's the first day of spring and it's snowing. Last weekend brought us a super moon and also a super bike selling time. The busy season is upon us. This can mean occasional lines at the register and wait times for big repairs are currently 2-3 days (but lots of small jobs can be done while you wait). We have a record number of bikes ready, plenty to go around, so don't worry if you've had us in mind but haven't come in yet to buy a bike--still a great selection that gets refreshed daily. If road bikes aren't your style, rest assured we have many other kinds of bikes to choose from. We look forward to helping you find a bike!

2. We have a huge selection of reconditioned bikes ready to sell for the spring season right here in the shop, and hundreds more tucked away in storage for later on.

(For anyone who is curious about what goes on behind the scenes: our vast selection of reconditioned bikes is the result of some impressive and meticulous planning by the shop director. Each week throughout the winter, a plan was made of what sizes and styles of bikes needed to be built that week. The plan was made based on projections of what sizes and styles will be in demand in spring, balanced of course with the supply of used bikes we had at hand. A mechanic would then choose a bike from the list to build to certain specifications. Some aesthetic decisions are made at the builder's discretion, but otherwise each style of bike we build gets an established selection of parts. this ensures that the prices of our reconditioned bikes can be consistent. Luckily for all of us, lovers of bikes that we are, there are so many variations in color, style, make and model of the bikes we build that boredom is rare. Every bike turns out different).

Spotlight on the Mixte Bicycle

A Mixte (as stated in Sheldon Brown's glossary, it's pronounced "mixty" here in the USA, "meext" in France and elsewhere) is a style of bicycle frame where there are three sets of rear stays instead of two, and the top tube is slanted down toward the rear wheel. The three rear stays are said to be stronger than other types of open frames. We find that it's a very versatile style, accommodating shorter riders who have trouble finding a frame they can stand over comfortably, people who have trouble swinging their leg over a higher top tube, and plenty of people simply like the style.

Here are just a few of the mixtes you can see here at the shop right now:

A classic Peugeot mixte.

A basic city mixte build. Lovely green and white paint!

An unusual touring style mixte with cantilever brakes, triple chainrings, Deore rear derailleur, Suntour bar-end shifters..

Single speed.

A Trek 420 mixte. This one is set up with swept-back bars and thumb shifters.

A classic Miyata mixte retrofitted with riser handlebars.

Everyone has something to say about this bike: 24" front wheel, stem shifters on a tall stem, Biopace chainrings, and drop bars. You have to see it to believe it.

Maybe because Valentine's day just happened, it seems ok to say a few words about love right now. We love building bikes here. We love bikes. Each bike we recondition has hours of love poured into it, and generally when someone buys a bike from us they love it too. Every morning here at the shop we bring dozens of bikes outside, and this gives us a chance to look at and admire each bike as it passes through our hands.

Here are just a few of the hundreds of beautiful bikes we've built up recently:

A hard to find small road bike. Yes, the front wheel is smaller than the rear wheel by design!

This graceful open frame Cilo single speed features a matching chainguard and upright promenade handlebars. Stylish!

A classic Raleigh Competition with cantilever brakes, unicrown fork, beautiful lugs, etc etc. Perfect for light touring, commuting, cyclocross, anything you like.

This one is something else-- a rare case where we chose not to recondition the bike, but gave it a little check over to sell "as-is" at a lower price than our regular line. Very solid, with matching blue anodized parts-- who can resist?

chain lube time.

Chain lube may have been our #1 seller last week. Even customers who we know are meticulous home mechanics--champions of preventative maintenance--were coming in with squeaky, rusted chains and asking what to do because the stuff they were applying just wasn't cutting it in the frozen, salty, sandy, slushy sleety stuff.

We stock a couple of types of chain lube that we recommend for the wet/cold/messy conditions we face here in Boston.

This time of year above all others, you really do have to keep up with it. Keep an eye on your chain. After each ride, evaluate. You want to re-apply lube well before your chain turns orange, squeaky, and bone-dry. Sand and salt really wreak havoc on the drivetrain.

We're always happy to give you a little demo on how to lube. Stop by any time.

Winter, Gift Ideas, and Recent Treasures!

Oh yeah, missing from this list are Baselayers (aka merino wool long underwear) that REALLY take the edge off the cold. we wouldn't want to do without them! We just got a new supply in, including some fun colors.

We encourage you to come here to do some holiday shopping this year, if you're doing that. We have things for your cyclists and your non-cyclists alike. winter commuting clinic + learn to fix your bike!

1. We're offering a FREE winter commuting clinic this Thursday, November 4, at 8:00-9:30 PM right here at the Bike Shop. This clinic is free and you can just show up, no need to register! Let us help you "endure the Brrrr" this fall and winter... come check out our selection of gear that will help you stay toasty on the bike and off, plus general commuting gear you can use in all weather and all seasons.

2. Our popular Basic Maintenance class for Adults is running two sections, both starting next week. Both classes meet 5 times, 8:00-10:00 pm, and cost $120.

Learn to repair your own bike! This basic mechanics course gives you the skills to maintain your own bike. Classes cover fixing a flat, adjusting brakes, gears, sizing a chain, and overhauling a hub. The final session gets into the basics of wheel truing but can cover other topics depending on the needs of your bike.

There are only six spots per class and you must enroll in advance. Call the bike shop at 617-522-0226 to pay by credit card over the phone, or stop by the shop. You can send a check, but note that we'll reserve a space for you only AFTER we receive payment, and classes fill quickly.

Basic Bike Repair Session 1 starts on Tuesday, 11/9-12/7, at 8:00 PM. $120, meets 5 times.

bike to school time!

Last week we met at least three different middle school and high school students who came in to outfit themselves sensibly for their new school commute. They each bought racks, panniers to hold their books and supplies, and lights for the ride home after extra-curriculars.

One student plans to ride from West Roxbury to Dorchester each day.

The others were riding from Jamaica Plain to Brookline.

We were so impressed by them, we just had to share.

This time of year, a lot of local bike blogs post a back-to-school/welcome back students guide. We're not going to reinvent the wheel here, but here's an abridged version. To ensure a safe and successful bike ride to school or work, here are some of the essentials to check off your list:

essential:

A U-lock
Lights, both front and rear
a helmet
take a moment to brush up on the rules of the road, then observe them.

Strongly recommended:

a rack and/or front basket
panniers (bags that attach to the aforementioned rack. they will let you carry things with ease!)
fenders (keeps rain and road off you and your bike when riding in or after "some weather")

And of course we are happy to help you find these things here in the shop!

Another thing we can do for you is help you figure out if your saddle is at the right height, if your brakes are working well enough, what pressure you should be inflating your tires to. Free advice!

Lasting peace and social justice require equitable and sustainable use of resources. Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) provides community-based education and assists development projects with recycled bicycles, related technologies and technical assistance as concrete alternatives to the militarism, over-consumption and inequality that breed war and environmental destruction. Our organization is part of a worldwide movement for peace and responsible stewardship of the earth.

BNB began in 1984 as an environmentally conscious campaign in support of social change in favor of the poor in Nicaragua. In 1990, BNB began to pursue its mission in Boston’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Today, we operate a thriving Bicycle Recycling and Youth Training Center where we offer six unique, high-quality programs that empower and organize youth and their families to work towards long-term change. Our programs create real community, with long-term, positive relationships built across lines of age, race, and class.

Position:
Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) seeks to hire a Youth Development Coordinator to oversee our youth programs. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. Salary range is $30,000 – 32,000. The Youth Development Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

Administration and Supervision (35%)

Practice peer supervision with Youth Programs Coordinator.
Supervise, evaluate, and support the professional development and growth of the Youth Programs Alumni Services Fellow.
Plan and facilitate regular team meetings with Youth Programs Team.
Act as Youth Programs Team liaison, by reporting regularly to Executive Director about program results and needs.
In collaboration with Youth Programs Coordinator, recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate and support the professional development and growth of youth staff (10-13 during the school year, 20-25 during the summer).
Ensure that volunteer and intern needs are met for all youth programs.
Oversee and ensure timely data entry for Youth Programs in the CiviCRM database through management of interns, volunteers and Alumni Services Fellow.
Develop annual budget for youth programs and monitor expenses.

Program Implementation (30%)

Implement two Girls in Action (GIA) sessions per year (6-8 weeks each), with the help and support of GIA intern.
Facilitate outreach and enrollment of Girls in Action.
Identify volunteer and intern staffing needs for Girls in Action. Manage volunteers and interns.

Curriculum and Capacity Building (20%)

Manage ongoing development of youth program curricula to ensure programs are best fulfilling and strengthening the organization’s mission of youth development, environmental stewardship, and social justice.
In collaboration with Youth Programs Team, develop annual goals and objectives for youth programs, and develop and implement tools for effective program evaluation.
Co-design, implement, and evaluate a strategy to increase youth organizing and advocacy among the Youth Instructor team.
Facilitate exchange and interaction between Youth Programs and other BNB departments.
Plan and coordinate periodic Youth Programs events to further youth development and build the BNB youth community.
Build BNB's collaborations with other organizations, including Boston area schools and community centers, connecting cycling and mechanics to students' academic success, physical and emotional fitness, and sense of civic engagement.
Represent Bikes Not Bombs to funders, allied organizations, parents, and the general public in collaboration with development and youth program staff.
Work with fellow community organizations to host events that further youth empowerment and overall BNB mission.

Resource Development (15%)

With the Executive Director, identify new grant opportunities, draft proposals and reports, and help to maintain yearly grants calendar.
Track and report youth programs data (numbers, improvements and anecdotes) for resource development purposes.

The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics and experience:

Ability to be both a creative, strategic visionary and a practical thinker
Self-motivated, highly organized, systems oriented
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills (one-on-one and in a group format), cultural competency, strong listening skills
Experience in program management and staff/volunteer supervision, with the ability to mentor, motivate, prioritize, and set clear expectations
Experience with and interest in developing youth organizing component of programming
2+ years experience working directly with 10-18 year olds
Knowledge of Boston neighborhoods, schools, and resources, including the dynamics of the neighborhoods surrounding BNB
Understanding of and commitment to positive youth development
Strong bike mechanics skills and knowledge of safe urban riding
Demonstrated commitment to inspiring environmental stewardship and social justice
Facility with Macintosh computers, and experience using MS Word and Excel
Experience developing and managing budgets
Strong collaborator, able to work with a team and adapt quickly to changing situations
Skills in program evaluation and curriculum development
Must be willing and able to work after-school program schedule and some Saturdays
Multilingual/Bilingual (Spanish, English, Haitian Creole and/or Cape Verdean Creole) candidates highly preferred

Movie nights are over, for now

Tomorrow's movie night is called off. It might not rain tomorrow, but it is really wet and the back yard in particular has several inches of water which means it could be quite muddy tomorrow. So we're calling off tomorrow's Bike-In movie. Meanwhile, we have a scheduling conflict on Sepetember 16, and an alternative date isn't obvious at the moment (our projectionist is going on vacation). So it looks like our summer Bike-in outdoor bike movies are over for now.
But it was fun while it lasted!

Stay tuned--our free clinics will resume in the fall, and we plan to organize several fun social events for the winter months.

Wheel Building Class 9/21-10/19

For a wheel to be perfectly round, the tension on each spoke must be adjusted and balanced, each slightly different to account for the flex response of the rim. These days most wheels are built by machines, which do an alright job, but can't achieve the finesse that a human set of hands and eyes can. A hand-built wheel is substantially more durable and will last longer, ride smoother, and need truing less often. When you build your own wheels, you can choose the quality and type of your hub, spokes, and rim. Learning to build your own wheels will also give you the skills to understand problems in used wheels and to true them by adjusting spoke tensions.

What's new this month:

Rain gear:
We now stock Showers Pass' Storm rain pants. This is a great lightweight pants shell that packs small in its own stuff sack. Made to fit over street clothes, yet trim and not billowy like other rain pants. We also stock the Club Shoe Covers, which you wear over regular shoes. They're awesome!

For rain jackets, we have the O2 hooded jacket in yellow. This is an inexpensive emergency shell that would be great to have in your bag any time.

Racks:
Looking for a basic, lightweight front platform rack for under $40? Look no further: we now have the Blackburn MTF-1 front rack. It says it's for off-road touring and mountain bikes, but it seems to clear most bikes with 700c wheels as well, which makes it a great option. And it comes with clamps for bikes that don't have mid-fork braze-ons.

Chocolate Covered Almonds from our friends and chocolate supplier, Taza Chocolate. Their newly-renovated factory was severely damaged in the floods that hit Somerville a couple weeks ago, and we're glad to hear they're getting back on their feet.

The results are in! the 23rd Annual Bike-A-Thon and 3rd Annual Green Roots Festival were a HUGE SUCCESS! A record number of riders helped us exceed our fundraising goal, and everyone had a blast at the Green Roots Festival. 458 registered riders raised over $125,000 to support the work of Bikes Not Bombs!

our first official outdoor bike in bike movie night is tonight, June 8! The weather will be cool so bring a sweater.
The movies start after 8:00 PM, as soon as it's dark enough. We have 20 chairs available. Feel free to bring your own dinner or refreshments. Our small concession stand sells Taza chocolate.

We'll be showing two documentaries tonight that touch on Bikes Not Bombs' international development work. first up, an 11-minute short by Ann Adelsberger about a workshop held at BNB a few years ago where a group of skilled individuals came together to design and build the Worldbike "chop & drop" cargo bike-- a serious cargo bike built from an old mountain bike frame. The film focuses on the technical aspects of fabricating this bike.

second, we'll show the full-length documentary Ayamye, by Tricia Todd and Eric Matthies. This documentary begins at a BNB container loading in Boston and focuses on two recipients of the bikes from the Village Bicycle Project in Ghana and how their lives were changed by the bikes they received.

David Branigan, International Programs Director at Bikes Not Bombs, lived in the village featured in the film. He will be on hand to answer questions.

There are so many events happening this week for people who ride bikes, we won't attempt to list them all here. Instead, we urge you to check out massbike's calendar. Two events that really stand out for us, though: Tuesday May 18 at 7:30 AM is Broadway Bicycle School's annual Pancake Breakfast. Always a fun time, it really is-- but this time all the more special because they are putting on a raffle to benefit Bikes Not Bombs' youth and International development work. So stop by, enjoy their famous pancakes and joie de vivre and buy some raffle tickets! We'll see some of you there!

Then later that night around 8:00 PM, if the weather permits, we are hosting the first of our summer movie nights right here at 18 Bartlett Sq. Literally a Bike-In-Movie night-- it's going to be in our parking lot. Come prepared to be comfortable outdoors--bring a camp chair if you easily can, (we have a limited chair supply here) and feel free to bring a picnic. But take heed! if it's raining, we will have to postpone.

Mother's Day is a nice time to think of mom and remember what she likes.

If mom is a cyclist, then choices are obvious here. For moms with little ones, a baby seat or trailer is a nice thing to look into. If mom's little ones have flown the nest, perhaps a nice new pannier or basket is a welcome accessory. And don't forget: we sell Taza chocolate, a fine part of any mother's day gift. If mom is not herself a bicyclist, or is already well-outfitted, or is sorely missed, may we remind you that mom probably wants YOU to wear a good helmet and have really bright bike lights for when you ride at night.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to help increase safety for cyclists in Boston. You may have heard about the three recent cycling/traffic related fatalities in Boston this month; this meeting was called in response to these accidents. Massbike is also providing bike safety classes that are free and open to all.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced the city’s first-ever Bicycling Safety Summit at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, April 21 at Boston University’s Morse Auditorium. The Summit will gather area bicyclists and high-ranking city officials to discuss ways of improving safety for everyone who uses Boston’s roadways. The Mayor’s announcement comes in the wake of a third recent bike accident and ahead of Boston Bike Week next month.

In light of the recent accidents, however, city officials encourage people to:

Visit the Boston Bikes fanpage on Facebook or join the Boston Bikes Twitter feed to learn more about the program and share concerns about specific roads in Boston;

There's also a new kind of security skewer on the scene, the Lock and Roll skewer from Zefal. It looks like a regular quick release skewer, but it can only be opened when the bike is upside down. Mary tried it, it works. This means you can lock just the frame in an upright position and not worry about that separate cable lock or special key for your wheels or seat. Pictured here is the seatpost version--the wheel skewers will be in next week.

Our winter clearance sale is still going on for another week or two. Lots of good stuff has been added. We've got the warmest winter cycling gloves in all sizes at 10-35 dollars off regular prices; wool knee, leg, and armwarmers are all -20 dollars off, a few of the merino wool baselayers are left at half off the regular price, and neck gaiters are reduced for quick sale! All of it is great stuff, the best there is, it's just priced to move so we can put out the spring gear.

We've added some non-winter items to the clearance list too, including a group of big durable awesome tires in the 700x35, 700x40, and 700x50 range. Any 29er-riders out there thinking about slick tires should come check out the Big Apples and other options we've got at up to 1/2 off regular price. Just imagine how a 700x50 balloon tire would feel going over a pot hole. Pretty good!
In addition to that we've got some road saddles, folding bead road tires, and some miscellaneous but cool (baby blue and stars) grips marked down.

Learn how to fix a flat tire. We'll show you how to remove the tire from the wheel, diagnose the flat, patch the tube, and get back on the road.

Everyone should know how to fix this most basic of breakdowns-- and once you know how, not only will you feel a certain satisfaction and security in knowing, but you'll save yourself time (bringing your bike to the expert), money (paying the expert), and yes, rubber (the expert doesn't want to patch your tube, s/he will install a new one). In this era where labor costs far outweigh the dollar cost of materials, most bike shops do not patch tubes. Rather, we install a brand new tube and send you on your way. This doesn't mean that a tube, once patched, doesn't have many more miles of potential use. We enjoy fixing flats for people, and are happy to do it, but we are also glad to have you know how to do it yourself.

This winter has been tough and sales of 700c x 35 Schwalbe Marathon Winter* 240-spike tires have been brisk--in fact we are nearly sold out until the end of the month. But we stock another size of this tire that just hasn't been getting much attention: 700c x 40. We have several pairs of these left, so to get them out the door we are slashing the price on 700 x 40 spike tires while supplies last. Save $26 PER PAIR (or $13/each) on 700 x 40 Marathon Winter only. The catch is that your bike must have ample tire clearance to run these. Many 700c bikes do not have quite enough. One bike that definitely does have the clearance is the Surly Crosscheck, which we also stock.

We now stock a ready-to-go dynamo front wheel that can power bright bike lights. That's right, you can generate your own electricity while you ride your bike! A major advantage of dynamo lights is they never need batteries, so you'll never get caught out with dying batteries and a fading light. In wintry weather, when batteries tend to drain faster, a generator light system like this definitely shines through. This 700c front wheel costs $160 and will work with most 700c wheeled hybrids and road bikes. (if you want a generator wheel in a different size or a disc brake compatible one, we can custom build one for you).

The light we stock to work with the dynamo wheel is the Planet Bike one-watt Blaze Dynamo light, $60. It has a steady and blinking function, and a power backup that keeps the light on for a few minutes when you stop, so you'll still be visible at an intersection.

There are other generator lighting systems out there, but this is a good basic one, finally available at a relatively low price. It's a great solution for commuting. You can come test this wheel out at the shop and see what you think.

Finally-- and here by popular demand--the MKS "DEEP" steel toeclip! Yes, many have requested this item and finally we've got them. MKS steel toeclips tend to run a little small, but these deeper ones are bigger to accommodate chunky shoes or winter boots.

We are selling our former rental bikes at a special price. Three of these bikes are on sale for $300 which includes a U-Lock, helmet, and basic light set in one tidy package. The other is priced at $225 as-is, and does not come with any extras.
These bikes have been tuned up and checked over but they are NOT RECONDITIONED--this means they do not necessarily have new cables, new chain and cassette, brake pads, or bearings. In all cases, we are selling them AS-IS, used, and they are not subject to any of the guarantees or 10% discount on new parts that our reconditioned bikes are. Bicycle Touring Primer

Last week's touring clinic was a great success, with a dozen or more people in attendance. We had a fun discussion and came up lots of neat things to think about regarding gear and clothing for overnight trips on bicycles. A few unexpected key points came up in discussion based on participants' prior experiences: wear wool or synthetic clothing, as cotton does not wick water or hold warmth and will freeze you. Don't wear underwear underneath your bike shorts. Consider lightweight backpacking tents and sleeping bags, because it's not as fun to be overburdened with heavy gear designed for car camping. Many campgrounds will accommodate cycletourists without prior reservations or minimum stay requirements--call ahead to make sure.

Below is a list of ideas and helpful links about planning a small tour in the Boston area.

New England Fall 2009 quick trip ideas:

• utilize the commuter rail to get further out there
• Commuter rail to Ipswich/Cape Ann and staying in B&Bs makes a great easy, low-mileage, highly scenic tour.

• Most state park campgrounds in MA are open until mid-October
• Boston to Provincetown Ferry, ride Cape Cod (lots of bike paths!)

Thursday night, 8-9 or so, we're having a talk about cycle touring. If you love the idea of getting out of town on your bike for a night (or weeks or months), this one's for you. We'll give an overview of gear if you're just starting out, some route and destination ideas (with a focus on very "do-able" trips in New England), and share ideas. Everyone has a different style or cycle touring priority, it seems--whether it's seeing new scenery, cooking elaborate meals over a campfire, sleeping in a tent, logging some serious miles, visiting a special destination by bike, bringing a musical instrument, staying in a B&B, meeting new people on the road, eating a lot... the list goes on.

new accessory of the week: cafe lock

This light-duty lock may be something to think about for your around-town bike.

It attaches to the seat stays by way of clamps, and when the lock is engaged through your rear wheel (by pressing a lever and removing the key), it keeps someone from easily rolling your bike away while you are sipping coffee or running an errand nearby. This relieves you of the need to hunt for some kind of hitching post to run your u-lock through (a task which seems to be getting harder as the numbers of bikes on the street increase--where to lock up?!). These cafe locks probably work best for bikes already bedecked with fenders, racks, bags or baskets, etc., the kind of bikes that are heavy enough that a thief would not want to be burdened with lugging it away.

Personally I can think of only a few specific public sidewalks/squares/pavillions around town where I would feel comfortable propping my bike up on a single kickstand and securing it this way without also tethering it to a pole, but maybe as spaces improve for cyclists and pedestrians there will be more opportunities for convenient locks like these to be useful. They are widely used in other countries.

We have established a direct-trade relationship with Dorothy, a seamstress in Koforidua, Ghana who makes a mean cycling cap. She is a friend of Ability Bikes, Ghana's new cooperative bike shop, which David Branigan of BNB helped establish this year. Her caps are made of recycled fabric and cost $15 at the bike shop.

French-threaded sealed bottom brackets are here!

Velo Orange has produced a low-cost sealed-bearing french threaded bottom bracket, and we are now stocking them! (yes, at the same price offered by VO).

This is really big news for anyone who ever yearned to convert a cottered crank french bike to cotterless, or yearned to make it a singlespeed conversion with good chainline. Or just wanted to upgrade to a cartridge BB.
